Please join Honor Flight San Diego at the "Spirit of '45 Day"community picnic celebration
that will be held at the Veteran's Museum and Memorial Center at 2115 Park Blvd, San Diego CA 92101 (Balboa Park) on Sunday, August 10, 2014 from 11 AM until 2 PM.
Activities that day will include: live WWII-era and Swing-era music, local community leaders
and celebrities, children's activities, vintage newsreels and most importantly the opportunity for students to meet and interact with WWII Veterans. The students will learn what it was like to hear that the war ended. Veterans will be asked to answer the question "Where were you on August 14, 1945"?
From what we have seen during the Honor Flights from San Diego, our children are very eager to hear directly from our WWII veterans. Our veterans' stories mean so much to all of us.
This event is a great opportunity for Honor Flight supporters and guardians to join the veterans at a super event honoring them!
Honor Flight San Diego will have a table set up in front of the museum starting at 10:30 AM.
Speakers will begin the program at noon. Veterans and guardians are asked to wear their
Honor Flight shirts & badges! Veterans should also wear their favorite WWII veteran hat and bring any military photos to share with everyone. We will be scanning military photos in order to make posters to be used in the next Veterans Day parade.
Chairs will be provided for all veterans to sit back and enjoy the festivities. Food will be
available for purchase at the event along with water and snacks provided at the Honor Flight table. Please feel free to bring your own picnic lunch. Parking is available in the north end of the museum's parking lot. US Naval Sea Cadets will be in the parking lot to assist veterans to the entrance gate. All Veterans over 80 years of age attending this event will receive a free lifetime membership to the Veteran's Museum and Memorial Center.
Additional information about Spirit of '45 Day can be found at www.spiritof45.org. On July 26, 2010, Congress unanimously approved "Spirit of '45 Day" a new National Day of Remembrance to recall the victory celebrations at the end of WWII 8-14-1945. "Spirit of '45 Day" will be celebrated this year on August 10th as the 69th anniversary of the day that President Truman announced the war was over. Future year celebrations will occur on the second Sunday of every August.
